Every February 14, Saint Valentine´s Day is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy. It is a very special day for many, where the importance of love is highlighted. This date has been celebrated for more than 500 years. According to history, the origin of Saint Valentine’s Day began after the death of St. Valentine of Rome, a priest convicted of secretly celebrating marriages of young lovers.
Valentine’s Day is not the same in every part of the world, each country has its own customs and ways of celebrating it. Here in Spain, on Valentine’s Day, many couples take the oppotunity to spend a romantic evening.
In schools, it is a very important day, because many crafts are made to decorate the school, or to give them to your boyfriend or girlfriend, and events are also organized.
Young couples meet on February 14 to go for a walk, or stay at home to watch a film. Sometimes there are parties, but it is not very common, since it is preferred to spend that special day as a couple. In my opinion, the most beautiful thing about this day is that they give each other gifts, and nomally they don’t buy them, but make them by hand. People give each other many cards decorated with hearts and cupids, they also send bouquets of flowers, usually roses. Many young people prepare a picnic on the beach or in the park to see the sun set.
Adults go on a romantic getaway together to a peaceful country or town. They give each other jewels, or a romantic evening in a restaurant, they also send flowers to each other, often while they are at work. On this day many children, teenagers and adults propose to someone. Many people get married on Valentine’s Day.
In my opinion, this day is not only for spending it as a couple, because if you don’t have one, it doesn’t matter, because you have yourself, your family and friends. The most important thing is to love yourself.
